a working mom rant // nursing is easy; pumping sucks

I knew being a working and breastfeeding mom would be challenging. I've had a lot of challenge in my life so I didn't think twice about taking it on. There have been some really difficult times though, which have made it clear to me why breastfeeding rates are so low in this country.

My milk pumping output has been pretty bad lately. It was bad before we left for Spain and I really looked forward to having 12 whole days of not having to pump. I thought that would give my supply a chance to increase, and it did! Then I got sick almost immediately upon returning home/back to work, and my supply took a big hit too.

I don't think any of this would be too much of a concern to me if I didnt have two doctors mention supplementing/formula feeding to me last week. Huge downer and blow to my confidence. First the doctor I saw for my sinus infection (who wanted to put me on different meds and have me "pump and dump"), then Evie's doctor, who said that Evie's weight gain was a bit slower than she'd like to see. Both doctors were supportive of my choice to continue exclusively breastfeeding, but its obvious that my milk supply needs help.

I have started taking fenugreek and have decided that, if there isnt any improvement this week, I will buy some formula and start supplementing. I dont want to have to do that, but we may need to, and truth be told these pumping times have become negative parts of my day. Something needs to change.

Keep up the good work, V. Pumping DOES suck :P (hehe... suck). You've made it so far already and she's about to start solids so I'd say you can pat yourself on the back rather than get down about it if the fenugreek doesn't work. I only got to 10mos with Tris and Bren and I was a SAHM so I think you're awesome :) Evie looks super healthy and chunky so she's doing very well, remember to factor in how much taller she's gotten! She was using all her food to get long. They've been telling me all 3 boys are underweight since 6mos old. We just have skinny babies ;) I think their charts have changed to account for the obesity issue in the states anyway. You're doing great, Mommy! :)

She's really getting into the solid food now. She likes eggs and avocado (well, guacamole... she wants some flavor! haha) which makes me happy because those are both nutritious and full of calories, and I have been letting her try little bites of whatever we're eating and she loves it! She fed herself some rice last night. :)

I smell like maple syrup and I think I'm making more milk but still not pumping more. I think my body just hates the pump! Oh well, she's been eating a lot this week and that's all that matters.
